Kings Norton Girls School, Birmingham.

Background

Background: The refurbishment of the library at Kings Norton Girls School is intended to breathe new life into what was an old and rather dated library resource centre.

The key objective of the project was to provide a library resource centre that not only created an environment that is conducive to effective study but also to provide an area that is modern, warm & welcoming and in which students can enjoy and benefit from their studies.

The Challenge

The Challenge: The key challenge was to devise a library that provides co-ordinated yet clearly differentiated areas for its differing uses and also to provide an atmosphere that is modern & welcoming and yet which retains a high degree of flexibility.

The relatively low ceilings necessitated the use of light materials to create an atmosphere that is both light and airy and appealing to the student body.

Our Solution

Our Solution: Silver and Maple were chosen as the key colours of the library and are utilised on the Reflection shelving systems, the IT suites as well as the reception area.

Wall mounted shelving units are complemented by free-standing shelves which are mounted on castors allowing them to be moved as and when required. The cohesiveness of this flexible approach is underscored by the use of fluid, flowing lines on the carpets which provde clear yet unobtrusive direction throughout the library.

The library has proved a huge hit with both staff and pupils alike and continues to be a popular, well-used and valuable resource for the school.
