The client required a modern and comfortable space that would provide an interactive, stimulating environment. They wanted to create an exceptional visitor experience for the whole community. The vision was for a flagship library that incorporated key design principles to make the space appealing, easy to navigate and engaging, with discovery around every corner.
The library needed to incorporate a number of separate key areas whilst maintaining a cohesive look and feel for those exploring the space. Another key feature of the library was the newly glazed front. The façade of the library can be seen from the street and it was essential that this section acted as a showcase for the building, attracting attention and stimulating interest from outside.
Starting at the entrance of the library, we provided a quick choice section that leads visitors into the library introducing the latest stock and giving a clear line of sight through the library.
The Ratio library shelving in this section of the library is moveable with concealed wheels. The furniture can be moved to create event space for up to 170 people. In addition, shelving in the children’s section of the library can be moved quickly to free up space for events.
Throughout the library the bespoke curved library shelving features a laminate plinth, raising the height of the lower shelves to make stock more accessible. The shelving is finished in a naturally light Pear wood laminate and accent colours are incorporated both on display end panels and on shelving back panels.
As part of the work we modernised the existing issue furniture to incorporate six self-service stations, the lines of sight allow customers to see a number of key areas including a member of staff, book stock, IT facilities, study areas, the children’s area and the exit.
The main customer enquiry point benefits from a bespoke counter complete with back lit front panels and variable desk heights to enable enquirers to sit or stand.
There is a prime focus on maximising face on book display potential throughout the library. Dynamic display shelving has been built around coloured pillars to complement the styling of the library shelving, with colour and lighting used for contrast and to attract attention.
Various brightly coloured Freedom book display units are placed in strategic positions to attract attention to specific titles and add to the ‘book shop’ feel. Bespoke AV display units were finished in black and have been accented with bright green edge lit acrylic, a material used to create light without electricity.
High quality, durable seating solutions were carefully selected to complement each area of the library. Vibrant colours and modern styling add to the visual impact.
In the children’s and young adult areas it was essential to create interactive and stimulating environments. This was achieved with feature walls, vibrant colours, dynamic lighting, high quality seating and hideaways.
