Libraries are essential to improving and aiding mental health this World Mental Health Day

This World Mental Health Day focuses on the mental health and well-being of young people that are growing up in today’s world. In a world where access to information is easier than ever, the widespread use of technology can also expose young people to additional pressures, cyber bullying and the violence that can be seen across the world in the news and social media. Adolescence is also a time where a lot of changes can happen in life; for example, starting university, moving away from home or starting a new job, and while this can be an exciting time these new stressors could also have a negative effect on a person’s mindset.

Research has shown that libraries have many positive effects on a person’s well-being, confidence and empathy, and reading for pleasure has been found to reduce symptoms of stress and depression. This makes libraries a crucial player in supporting those affected by mental ill-health and educating others to reduce the stigma that mental health often carries.

As a manufacturer of library furniture for schools, universities, public and health libraries, our talented designers are experts in crafting spaces that not only give young people a place to learn and study, but also a place where they can grow in confidence, nurture their creativity, access information about mental health and well-being or even just take a breather in a quiet safe space.
